The Kitchen Designer’s Grand Opportunity

What happens when a master kitchen designer needs a new kitchen? After 25 years of designing kitchens for others I had all the tools to make our home kitchen a special place. While we were making only minor changes to the overall floor plan we wanted to make the cabinets more functional and upgrade all materials. Kris and I made our list of wants, needs and dreams and that became the basis of our design.

Here are a few of the items that we incorporated to make the cabinets more functional:

[ ] Full extension rollout shelves with soft-close guides in all base cabinets

[ ] Organizers in all drawers for utensils, pots and pans

[ ] Tray dividers in two cabinets to organize trays, muffin tins, baking dishes and cookie sheets

[ ] Lazy susan in a corner base cabinet for spices and baking ingredients

[ ] Food and water dishes built into the back of our peninsula cabinets for our dog Quinn

[ ] Shoe racks built into the back of the peninsula near our main entry door

[ ] Pull-out recycle and trash bins

[ ] A pop-up shelf for our heavy Cuisinart mixer

The material upgrades that we included were:

[ ] Quartersawn cherry cabinets with soft-close hinges and drawer guides

[ ] New LED surface lights in place of our old halogen recessed lights, a great energy saver

[ ] New LED undercabinet lights to illuminate our beautiful new backsplash. Those lights also provide great night time ambiance.

[ ] New granite countertops

[ ] Custom granite and marble backsplash with mountain scene

The results are stunning! The mountain scene in our backsplash is a built-in piece of art that we really appreciate. The details of the cabinets make the kitchen more enjoyable for cooking and have encouraged us to try some new recipes. Our dog Quinn loves his special place so we are one happy family in our new/old kitchen!
